AFRIN, Syria (September 8, 2017) – The Russian military police have set up observation centres near Afrin in the north of the Syrian province of Aleppo. Their units ensure compliance with the ceasefire in the new safe zone. This was announced by lieutenant colonel Georgiy Petrunin of Russia’s military police on Friday.
According to Petrunin, about five cars loaded with personal belongings drove through the Russian-Syrian checkpoint during the last day. Some of the locals welcome Russian soldiers very friendly, some of them even bring homemade bread for the soldiers.
A new protection zone had previously been established in the north of Aleppo province. The Russian Centre for Reconciliation of the Conflicting Parties in Syria has contributed to this. In order to prevent provocations and clashes, units of the Russian military police are deployed in the new protection zone. Two control points and four observation centres for the Russian military have also been set up. The cooperation between Russian units and SDF units is intended to bring peace back to the region.
However, just one day later there are reports of renewed attacks by the turkish-backed rebels against the region.
